Dr Dominic Standish – Academic and Author

Dominic, Riccardo, Laura and Steffan, on Constitution Bridge, Venice, 2010.
The Constitution Bridge over the Grand Canal opened in 2008. It is a welcome example of development in the city, but was berated as a modern eyesore. It is the fourth bridge over the Grand Canal and Venice’s first new bridge for 70 years. Designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the 94 meter (308 feet) bridge linking Piazzale Roma with the railway station has a very modern design, with glass sides along a sleek arc of steel. Its placement between two modern areas on the edge of the historic city conforms to the marginalization of modernity from the city center, discussed in ‘Venice in Environmental Peril? Myth and Reality’ (2011) by Dominic Standish.
